Subject: Emacs, new redisplay & Asian characters

RMS named you as an expert for the handling of Asian characters in
Emacs. Please let me describe the background in short before I
explain why I would be thankful for your assistance.
Some time ago, RMS asked me if I would like to do some work on Emacs.
I agreed and picked an item from the Emacs to do list---support for
variable width fonts; we later exended the task to variable height
lines, pixmaps, marginal areas etc.
This new redisplay has now reached a point (variable width and height
should work) that RMS and I agreed that it would be a good point to
give a first version to testers, provided that a few open points were
resolved.
One such open point is the proper display of Asian characters in both
terminal frames and under X. Since I have no experience at all with
Asian languages, fonts, and displays, my guess is that the new
redisplay code does not handle them right, although I tried to reuse
as much as I could (and understood) from the old redisplay code.
Would you be willing and would you have the time to check this aspect
of the new redisplay?
If so, I could send you patches against Emacs 20.2 next weekend, with
a description of where to look, of course.
